How do I find my ancestors?

Are you are interested in knowing more about your UK ancestry, but don’t know where to start? Perhaps you have already done some research on your family tree but have got stuck and are not sure where to go next. Maybe you simply don't have time to work through those piles of papers and old family photos that have been accumulating over the years and need ‘sorting out’.

These are the kinds of things I hear from my clients when they come to me for help. Many people have already researched part of their family tree themselves (although if you are starting from scratch, that’s fine too) and have found themselves overwhelmed and confused by the huge amount of information that they’ve found online. It all looks so easy on TV…but how do you know whether the document you have found is really about your ancestor, or someone else with the same name? And what about DNA testing – does it help, or does it just add to the ‘information overload’?

About me

Genealogy is a very popular hobby and more and more people are getting interested in it all the time. The availability of online records has increased hugely in the last few years, making it much easier for beginners to start looking into their family tree and to find out who their ancestors were. However, many people get back a few generations then get stuck. This is where a professional genealogist can help.

How it works

I will ask you to provide me with details of what you are hoping to find, then I will produce a plan tailored to your goals, including timelines and estimated costs. The planning part is free, with no obligation to go ahead if you don’t want to. It's important that you give me all the information you already have before I start, so that I can make sure I don't waste my time and your money searching for something that you already know. That said, it may be necessary to verify some of your existing information, if you are not certain where it came from. Family stories passed on by previous generations can be extremely helpful in getting started, but they are not always 100% accurate.
